Browsing through the yoga books at the bookstore the past few days I have been struck by how many books that are targeted towards men attempt to take the spiritual aspect out of yoga. Now of course not every man is going to wish to learn the deeper levels of yoga right off and many men (and women) simply want to learn an effective form of health, stretching and injury prevention. Yoga provides all of this of course and yet so much more that it is a shame to exclude the truth about yoga. Yoga is union with the Divine. And as we awaken our spine, our breath, the wholeness of our being, we become the temple we were born to be. To assume that a “real man” is not capable of embracing the physical as well as the spiritual is a grave neglect. Many books even claim that “real men” are not interested in classical yoga teachings and mainly want the “meat and potato’s” of any good yoga instruction. This is in no meant to slight the authors of any such books. Marketing needs a hook and this angle seems to work exceptionally well. However it would be meaningful and interesting to see the entire art of yoga presented to an actual “real man” who is unafraid to be fully present to the larger aspect
